Being a relatively small size dog the Beagle has an athletic body which presents a squared chest. His big eyes will acquire your love and attention. The Beagle has relatively short hair, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t brush him. The breed is an average shedder so that shouldn’t be a problem if you carefully take care of your Beagle. Remember to bath him if necessarily and to trim his nails.

The most common diseases for a Beagle are epilepsy, heart and eye disease, some strains suffer from dwarfism as well. Keep in mind that the height of Beagle averages between 14-16 inches (36-41cm) for males and 13-15 inches (33-38cm) for females.

There are two height classes for Beagle dogs, 13-15 inches (33-38cm) and under 13 inches (33cm). The weight of the Dogs is around 22-25 pounds (10-11kg) and for Bitches that is around 20-23 pounds (9-10kg).

The average lifespan of a Beagle is between 12 – 15 years. And the size of the nest can be between 2 and 14 puppies but is usually of around 7 puppies.

Back in 1500 the first Beagle’s were being used to hunt rabbit, hare and other small game. The Beagle is now the most popular dog breed in the US but it was started in England. The name Beagle seems to come from a French hunting team that was called be’geule which meant gape throat, an association to the baying voice of the dog. The Beagle is an excellent hunter and it can serve this purpose by himself or in a group or pack.

Having a Beagle around your house is a great idea they make ideal indoor pets but they do need attention as well if you want them to not suffer from anxiety. A small backyard will suffice for their needs. Also a great idea would be to take them for walks periodically.  Your Beagle will be the one to be next to you greeting everyone coming to visit you by waggling his tail.

He has a happy and curious personality. We don’t recommend you to take the leash off your Beagle in a small, unsafe place outside since he will go around and start exploring. Actually, they like so much to explore that they just won’t even hear your call or they might choose to ignore your calls if they caught a sent, they will follow it without thinking twice about it. Also the barking of a Beagle resembles more to a short haul then to a bark.
